A very entertaining, wildly imaginative animated film based on a seemingly terrible material: the Danish brand of toy interlocking bricks. Emmet is an everyman construction worker who works for the Octan Corporation, the only company in the very conformist Legoland and whose president is the evil Lord Business (for a movie that includes a brand in its title, its tone is surprisingly anti corporate). When Emmet unexpectedly finds a piece called the Piece of Resistance (whom a Gandalf-like wizard called Vitruvius has prophesied would be found by the chosen one who would overthrow the tyranny of Lord Business), he is sought by the henchmen of Lord Business, while he is helped in his escape by the rebel girl Wildstyle. Funny and entertaining (the movie includes an extended part of a Lego Batman), surprisingly profound at times (the movie in some way is a paean to common man Emmet) and with nods to such filmsThe Truman Show and The Matrix. The dazzling computer animation and the intelligent script help a lot. Among the actors giving voice to the animated characters are Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman. Towards the end, two human actors (including Ferrell) appear to give the plot a tight ending. Did I miss something, 'cause I don't know WHY they made "The Lego Movie , except , possibly to sell more Legos. This is a giant piece of advertising for the ubiquitous Lego toys , that goes on for two hours, and seems to be designed for children under the age of 6, because I can't even think of what it was like to sit in a movie theatre watching this giant toy fest! To think that adults are raving about this extended Saturday morning toy commercial is kind of shocking , unless these adults are completely afflicted with a strong dose of ADD & ADHD! I have a hard time watching a lot of digitally designed animated cartoons , but to watch a bunch of Lego toys move around , dance and sing like they were real things , and to have people respond to it like it's great entertainment , is very strange , and a little disturbing. OK , I get it , it's a commentary on how conformity is a bad thing , and how we are all individuals , but the fact that people responded to the way they did, just shows to me that people love conformity. All told, there's an ageless warmth to The LEGO Movie akin to that of the LEGO brand itself.
